Internal Truck Tracker: IoT Prototype for Yard Management

Supply chain efficiency doesn't stop at the factory gates. We partnered with BTPro to develop a high-impact Proof of Concept (PoC) for Procter & Gamble (P&G), focusing on an Internal Truck Tracker. This IoT-driven prototype was engineered to monitor truck parkings and optimize the flow of logistics vehicles across massive industrial sites.

The Challenge

Managing the continuous influx and outflux of heavy logistics vehicles at P&G's industrial facilities presented a significant operational puzzle. Without a unified, real-time tracking system, the yard operations faced several bottlenecks:

  • Inefficient utilization of available truck parking spaces.
  • Congestion and delayed loading/unloading times due to suboptimal routing.
  • A lack of real-time visibility for yard managers attempting to orchestrate the flow of traffic.

P&G needed a working prototype that could prove the viability of IoT tracking to solve these logistical hurdles before rolling out a full-scale enterprise solution.

The Engineering Solution

Working in close collaboration with BTPro, we designed and developed an agile, scalable Proof of Concept. The goal was not just to build a functional tracker, but to create a robust foundational architecture that could be seamlessly handed over to P&G's internal development teams.

Key Technical Pillars

1. Real-Time Occupancy & Tracking

We integrated IoT telemetry to capture live data on truck locations and parking bay occupancy. This allowed the system to maintain a real-time digital twin of the industrial yard, identifying empty spaces and tracking vehicle dwell times.

2. Flow Optimization Logic

Data is only as good as the actions it drives. The PoC included an optimization layer designed to route incoming trucks to the most efficient parking spots or loading docks, actively preventing gridlock and minimizing engine idle times on the premises.

3. Seamless Architecture Handoff

Because this was a Proof of Concept intended for internal scaling, code quality and documentation were paramount. We structured the backend services and data pipelines so that upon project completion, P&G's internal engineering teams could take ownership, integrate it with their existing ERP systems, and scale the deployment across global sites.

The Impact

The prototype successfully demonstrated how IoT infrastructure could transform a chaotic industrial yard into a highly orchestrated logistical hub.

MetricPoC Outcome
VisibilityProvided 100% real-time mapping of tracked vehicles and parking utilization.
Flow EfficiencyDemonstrated clear pathways to reduce bottlenecks and truck idle times.
ScalabilityDelivered a fully documented, modular architecture successfully handed off to internal teams for enterprise expansion.

Optimizing industrial flow isn't just about moving vehicles faster; it's about intelligent orchestration. By partnering with BTPro, we delivered a prototype to P&G that proved complex yard logistics could be solved with elegant, scalable IoT architecture.
